Adolf Witt

Professor EMERITUS
Ph.D. UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, 1967

Research and Teaching Interests

After earning his Ph.D. in astrophysics he joined the newly formed Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Toledo in the same year. His research has involved multiple aspects of interstellar dust, ranging from the exploration of scattering properties at UV, optical and near-IR wavelengths to the attenuation of the integrated starlight in dusty galaxies and optical photoluminescence by interstellar nanoparticles. More recently, his focus has been on possible connections and common carriers among nanoparticle-related interstellar phenomena observed as extended red emission (ERE), anomalous dust emission (AME) and diffuse interstellar bands (DIB).

areas of expertise

  • Scattering properties of interstellar grains
  • Monte Carlo radiative transfer in dusty astronomical systems
  • Observational aspects of interstellar nanoparticles
