University of Toledo

Centennial Mall

As part of its centennial celebration in 1972, the University undertook a campaign to fund campus beautification. The result? Centennial Mall, the green heart of the UToledo Main Campus.

Prior to the construction of the mall, the area between University Hall and the Student Union was the site of “temporary” classroom barracks purchased from Army surplus after World War II. After 30 years, the last of the barracks was torn down to construct the mall.

Centennial Mall changed the entire feel of the campus. It was recognized by the American Society of Landscape Architects as one of the most beautifully landscaped spots in the country.

Centennial Mall features the University Seal, which features in a notable UToledo tradition. Whenever you’re on campus, be sure to pass by the Seal on the right side, symbolizing your desire to take the right path in your journey to knowledge. If you pass by on the left, legend says you’ll fail your next exam!
