Fight continues against online sex trafficking

Published by Senator Rob Portman

In a riveting documentary titled “I Am Jane Doe” that is being screened in Toledo on Tuesday night, a mother talks about seeing her missing underage daughter’s photograph on a website called Backpage.com, the largest online sex marketplace in the United States.

As chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, [Senator Portman], along with Sen. Claire McCaskill (D., Mo.), led a bipartisan investigation into online sex trafficking.

In the course of our investigation, this website came up again and again.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says that nearly three quarters of all suspected child sex-trafficking reports that it receives through its “CyberTipline” are linked to this one website. And according to a leading anti-trafficking organization called Shared Hope International, more than 80 percent of the trafficking victims they work with were trafficked on Backpage.com.

Funding to Assist Human Trafficking Victims Boosted

The grant, awarded to the University of Toledo Foundation, is the largest of nine grants totaling $216,646 announced Monday by the community foundation.

The money will be used to help coordinate services provided by numerous area organizations to victims of human trafficking and then show how those services help improve lives.
