Health Education Doctorate Overview

There are good reasons The University of Toledo's Ph.D. program in health education has twice been named one of the best health-education graduate programs in the country by the American Journal of Health Education.  

Our doctoral program is comprehensive and versatile. Our Ph.D. students get experience in:

Each health-education doctoral degree student is assigned a program committee with a program advisor and two faculty members. The program committee helps you stay on track and select electives and a cognate that fit your interests. 

Health Education Doctorate Highlights

Comprehensive curriculum. We offer electives to suit your interests — from social marketing to community mental health. Graduate students also choose one of nine minors, or cognates. Popular options include: 

  • Health policy 
  • Statistics and research design 
  • Educational psychology 
  • Geography and planning  

Award-winning faculty. UToledo health-education faculty members have earned multiple awards and recognition from national and state professional organizations. 

Service. Our doctoral program is committed to giving back to the community. Every semester, students work with various local agencies and apply what they learn in the classroom.  

Generous financial help.  

  • Graduate assistantships — a nine-month stipend and tuition reimbursement typically cover a four-year period. Graduate assistants teach undergraduate courses, engage in research projects and work with local agencies for real-world experience. 
  • Research graduate assistantships — work with faculty on research projects on a variety of topics in health education. 
  • University fellowships — the highest award offered by the College of Graduate Studies. Awarded to incoming doctoral students with exceptional academic records. Can be renewed for up to three years. 

Flexibility. The University of Toledo accepts applications for the doctoral degree program in health education on a rolling basis. All admits start in the fall semester.  

Strong alumni network. Health education has a long history at UToledo. Our active alumni are eager to help recent graduates. 


Career Opportunities

UToledo health education Ph.D. graduates are well prepared for successful careers: 

  • Teaching health education in a college or university setting
  • Working as a health educator in public or nonprofit community-health agencies
  • Conducting research and evaluation across a wide variety of health-related topics
  • Working in local, state or federal government agencies
