Certificate in Environmental Policy

The Environmental Policy certificate is designed for graduate students who desire to work in public or nonprofit organizations focused on the environment. It provides an overview of the policy process and students can tailor their studies around environmental science or environmental advocacy. This 15 credit hour certificate can be used to fulfill electives in programs such as the Master of Public Administration (MPA).

Additional requirements

  • Course requirements in the program must be completed within a three-year period.
  • Students must maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0.
  • The certification can be completed independently of a regular graduate degree program, such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Public Administration (MPA), Master of Arts (MA), or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Students seeking to complete the certificate within a regular graduate degree program must first meet all the standards for admission to each program and apply to each program.

Applications must include

  1. Official transcripts from all previous colleges or universities you have attended (both graduate and undergraduate);
  2. An undergraduate degree with a minimum GPA of 2.5 calculated on a 4.0 basis or 5 years of relevant work experience;
  3. GRE and TOEFL scores: GRE scores are not required. However, in addition to the requirements for regular admission, all applicants from non-English speaking countries must take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Admission to graduate study in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration requires a TOEFL iBT score of at least 100 or a IELTS score of at least 7.0 overall;
  4. Three letters of recommendation, which must be academically or employment related. These should be from individuals familiar with the applicant’s academic abilities and professional goals. Applicants who obtained their undergraduate degrees in the last five years must submit at least one academic letter;
  5. A thoughtfully drafted statement of purpose.
