Political Science and Public Administration

Master of Arts in Political Science

Admission Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree in any area of study
  • An undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 or more
  • At least three courses in political science
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) verbal, quantitative, and analytic scores near 550 or higher in each
  • Three letters of recommendation from people who can assess the applicant's potential for graduate study
  • astatement of purpose that sets forth the student's particular interest in the advanced study of politics and government.
  • Those who meet these standards are granted regular admission. Students without GRE scores or who bring undergraduate GPAs between 2.5 and 2.69 may be granted provisional status. Those with fewer than 9 semester hours of course work in political science may be categorized as undergraduate with degree (UWD) until the required number of courses are completed. Because experience shows that those with GPAs below 2.5 and with low GRE scores have difficulty completing the degree, they are rarely admitted.

Applications for admission can be obtained from: The Graduate School, The University of Toledo, 2801 West Bancroft St., Toledo, OH 43606-3390. Telephone (419) 530-4723. If you submit your application electronically, consider polishing your Statement and sending it separately by e-mail. It is easy to make a mistake using the form on line. Decisions regarding admission to the program and other policy matters are made by the Director of the M.A. program, in consultation with the department's Master of Arts Committee.

International students who do not speak English as their primary language need to submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The Office of International Services provides electronic guidance.
