FEDERAL WORK-STUDY

Maintaining Eligibility

You must maintain a satisfactory academic GPA:

  • 2.0 GPA for undergraduates
  • 3.0 GPA for graduate students.

You may not report hours worked during your scheduled class time.

What Is Federal Work-Study?

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) program is designed to assist students who demonstrate financial need to provide the opportunity for on-campus employment.  FWS is an employment program and there is no advance payment of FWS funds. You will be paid bi-weekly for hours worked.

How Is Federal Work-Study Awarded?

You must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year to determine financial eligibility for FWS. You may indicate on question 31 of the FAFSA if you have an interest in FWS. FWS funding is limited and is awarded to the earliest applicants with financial needs. Funds may become available throughout the year.

After filing your FAFSA you will receive a financial aid award package.  If you were not offered FWS and are interested, contact Rocket Solution Central (RSC) to see if you may be eligible. You may be put on a waitlist if all the FWS funds have been awarded.

What happens after the Federal Work-Study award is offered on my account?

You may go into the MyUT portal and accept the FWS award or decline it if you no longer want to use FWS.

Once you have accepted the award the FWS agreement will be mailed to you.  Work-study agreements are printed out on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week.  If you would like to pick up the agreement, contact RSC and ask that it be held at their office.

How do I find a job?

All on-campus student employment positions are posted on Handshake for a minimum of 7 days.  All registered students have a Handshake account that is automatically created for them 24-hours after registering for classes. Once you have been offered a position, take the FWS agreement to your supervisor. They will work with you to fill this out as well as any other hiring paperwork that needs to be completed.
