The Biomaterials Research Laboratory (BRL) is directed by Dr. Aisling Coughlan Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Toledo. The BRL aims to provide material based solutions to current and emerging healthcare priorities. In particular, our focus is on the development of novel glass based biomaterials with orthopedic, dental, sterile & non-sterile and pharmaceutical applications.

Currently our main areas of research are:

  • Development of 3D printed bioactive glass for load bearing devices
  • Antibacterial coatings based on glass (ionomer) polyalkenoate Cement
  • Chemotherapeutic implantable materials
  • Hemostatic agents for both sterile and non-sterile environments
