Biographical/Historical Sketch

Monroe Street United Methodist Church traces their beginning to 1825. That year, John Baughman, the first ordained minister circuit rider in Northwest Ohio, rode into the settlement near the Tremainsville Bridge over Ten Mile Creek, (now known as the Ottawa River) and according to church records asked whether there was, “an opening hereabouts to preach the Gospel.”  One of the settlers, Eli Hubbard, offered his log cabin for a meeting place and that service is claimed to be the first Protestant service held within the present limits of Toledo.  Soon a class was formed and met on a regular basis, whether or not a circuit rider was available to provide a sermon.  Little is known about the class except the names of some of its members:  Mr. and Mrs. William Wilkinson, Amasa Bishop, Mrs. Maria Whitney, Mary and Sarah Keeler, and John, Samuel, and Sophronia Horton.

The class soon outgrew the Hubbard cabin however, and in 1833 split into two separate classes and homes. The class formed by Mr. Noah and Maria Whitney, which began meeting in their home on Detroit Avenue, would be the forbears of the Monroe Street Congregation, and the other class the forbears of the Collingwood Methodist Congregation. It wasn’t long before the Whitney class outgrew their home however, and began meeting in a log schoolhouse on Auburn Avenue near Bancroft.

In 1837, the congregation was able to move into a two-story frame structure that they shared with the Collingwood Methodist congregation.  This building was later sold to the Lenk Wine Company and housed a huge oak wine cask that, at the time, was the largest in the world.  In 1923, the structure was sold to the DeVilbiss Company, but was later demolished.

In 1859 a brick building was constructed at the corner of Monroe Street and Auburn Avenue at the cost of $1,400 and was dedicated in the summer of that year. William Thatcher was the pastor at the time and this was also when the church’s name officially became Monroe Street Methodist Church. Circuit riders continued to provide sermons until 1875, when Thomas N. Barkdull became the first full-time pastor.  Also in the 1870s, a dispute arose when part of the congregation started a movement to sell the church building and move eastward closer to the city.  This effort was defeated, and the congregation remained in the brick structure until it burned in 1891.  A new building was constructed at the same location before the year ended, and was enlarged four years later.  In May 1905, the church celebrated its eightieth anniversary.

During the following years, and especially after World War I, Toledo’s western suburbs increased substantially and by 1923 church membership had grown so much that the congregation began discussing construction of an even larger facility.   The idea of taking on such a huge financial obligation was staggering to people of such humble means, but they agreed to proceed. A site at the corner of Monroe Street and Rosedale Avenue was selected and construction began.  Two years later, in 1925, the first unit of the new church facility was dedicated, and its members celebrated their one hundredth anniversary by marching from the former location of the old church to the site of the new one. At the time of the dedication, membership was recorded at 1,400. Construction of an additional structure that would include a sanctuary and music and educational facilities was planned as soon as the loan for the first unit could be paid.

Unfortunately, the Great Depression hit the Monroe Street congregation hard. With approximately a third of its members unemployed and $85,000 in debt from the construction of the new building, the church began a financial campaign to have its members commit to give an extra penny per day. With nearly 800 members committed to this enough money was provided to make payments on the interest of their loans for a number of years.

By 1943 the mortgage had been paid in full and by 1955 they were able to add the sanctuary facility. Membership had been steadily growing, reaching 2,450 in 1950 and nearly 3,000 by 1960. In 1964, a new three-manual Moller Organ was installed in the sanctuary and in 1970 membership exceeded 3,200.

The church’s growth was slowed by the late 1970s however, and was forced to make financial cuts in the face of declining membership and rising inflation. In 1990, a Building Task force was created to find ways of using the large facilities more efficiently and cost-effectively, even discussing the possibility of blocking off a significant portion of the Education Building to save on utility costs. By 1991, the church membership had been reduced by more than half and Monroe Street began renting out a significant amount of classroom space to charitable neighborhood organizations. Along with these changes church leaders have sought to strengthen the worship and evangelism strategy to reach out to the local neighborhoods, a challenge which continues to face Monroe Street today.

S.1 ADMINISTRATIVE FILES

*** In 1968, the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) churches merged to create the United Methodist Church.  Prior to the merger, the governing body of the individual Methodist churches was called the “Official Board.”  After the merger, the name of the governing body was eventually changed in the individual churches to “Administrative Board.”  While the Administrative Board dealt with the administration of the building, finances, Trustees, etc., and another body called the “Council on Ministries” dealt with the programming of the church.  This continued for approximately twenty years until the two governing bodies merged and became known as the “Administrative Council.”

These minutes are scattered with many other types of documents, including the reports of various subordinate committees, lists of officers, minutes of quarterly and charge conferences, budgets and other financial notes and documents, correspondence, resolutions, bulletins, newsletters, etc.***
