Biographical Sketch

Bob Littin began collecting newspapers documenting important historical events while a teenager.  His son, Rob, began collecting them as well during the past few years.  Both are graduates of The University of Toledo:  Bob in 1940, and Rob in 1976.

In October 2009, the Littins sent their newspaper collection to Dr. Lloyd Jacobs, president of The University of Toledo.  Dr. Jacobs transferred the collection to the Canaday Center in November 2009.

 Scope and Content Note

The Bob and Rob Littin Historical Newspaper Collection consists of newspapers from various U.S. and a few foreign cities documenting important events in our nation’s history dating 1875 to 2008.  A majority of the papers are from Toledo.  The collection was housed in two large leather portfolios, with most unfolded and placed in plastic sleeves.  They have been removed from the portfolios and placed in acid-free boxes.  Because of the fragility of the newspapers, no attempt has been made to arrange the collection.  Earlier newspapers are located in Box 1, and later newspapers in Box 2.  Box 2 also contains come loose papers, and these are filed at the end.

Of particular note because of the geographic location of the newspaper covering the story are the Honolulu Star-Bulletin of December 7, 1941 (bombing of Pearl Harbor); the London Daily Mail of July 30, 1981 (the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana); and the Wall Street Journal of October 20, 1987 (the stock market crash).

The inventory identifies the historical event, date, and newspaper.
