Historical/Biographical Sketch
Dr. Alfred Foster joined the UT faculty in 1946, after his graduation from Wooster College in 1938. While at Wooster, Foster effectively balanced his academic studies and music passions. He had a place in Phi Beta Kappa as well as other physics and chemistry honorary societies. In the orchestra, he played the French horn alongside his future wife, Betty Hofacker, who played the violin. Putting his academic career briefly on hold, he joined the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. Later, he returned to The Ohio State University to gain his Ph.D. in 1950.
Dr. Alfred Foster served continuously at the University of Toledo except for 1948-1950 when he worked as a research assistant at The Ohio State University. In addition to teaching, Foster was the associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1968 to 1969, and the acting dean of the Graduate School from 1969-1970.
Dr. Foster received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in 1977. He did research including three Atomic Energy Comm-Canaday Fellowships for summer study. He was UT’s representative to the Council of Central States Universities, Inc. Among his affiliations are the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemists, American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, Ohio Academy of Science, and honoraries including Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Pi Sigma, Phi Lambda Epsilon, and Phi Beta Kappa.
Dr. Alfred Foster was an active alumni at Wooster. In 2008, he was president of the 70th class reunion. The next year, February, 28, 2009, Dr. Alfred Foster died. In his memory, the University of Toledo established the Dr. Alfred and Betty Foster Nursing Scholarship and the Dr. Alfred Foster Chemistry Award.
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains the papers of Dr. Alfred Foster, Professor of Chemistry and Dean of the Graduate School. Included in the materials are many memos written to and received from other faculty members and members of the administration.
A large portion of the collection deals with Alfred Foster’s contacts in the Central States Universities Inc. Included in the Central States materials are minutes of meetings, reports issued by CSUI, newsletters of CSUI, and bulletins from the Argonne National Laboratory where CSUI held many of its meetings.
Also in the collection are lists of possible Chemistry and Biology Department Chairmen, and the lists of why or why not certain people were considered for the position.
Many proposals for the expanding of the campus to include a biology-chemistry building and for expanding the curriculum to include graduate programs are also in this collection.
Plans for the biology-chemistry building have been placed in a separate oversized box for the ease of storage and protection of the material. These plans include blueprints for the entire building along with plans for each type of room in the building. Also in these plans are the specifications for the new building and detailed instructions for the specific laboratories.
