Historical/Biographical Sketch

Dr. Panos D. Bardis was born in Lefcohorion, Arcadia, Greece on September 24, 1924. He received his B.A. magna cum laude from Bethany College in 1950 and a M.A. from Notre Dame in 1953. He earned his Ph.D. in Family Sociology from Purdue University in 1955. After serving on the faculty of Albion College until 1959, he joined the faculty of the University of Toledo where he taught until his retirement in June 1989. He received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Bethany College and an Outstanding Teacher Award at the University of Toledo.


Dr. Bardis had an extremely active life as a sociology and anthropology professor at the University of Toledo. He was a member of over 60 professional organizations and was an Associate Editor or Book Review Editor of nearly 40 journals. He also was Editor-in-Chief and Book Review Editor of the International Social Science Review and the International Journal on World Peace. A prolific writer, Dr. Bardis published a novel, nearly 20 books, and over 490 scholarly articles, short stories, and poems. He also composed 20 songs for the mandolin. Dr. Bardis also invented a poetic style, called Pandebar, which has received worldwide recognition. Internationally known, Dr. Bardis is listed in over 60 who’s who publications including Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who ii The World, and Almanac of Famous People.  

Dr. Bardis was married to Donna Jean Bardis and had two sons, Byron Galen and Jason Dante. He passed away August 8, 1996.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains many of Dr. Bardis’ published articles, essays, and poems from 1958 to the present (1993). Numerous university press releases and book reviews concerning Dr. Bardis are included. The collection also contains Dr. Bardis’ sociological scales used to measure such things as attitude toward religion, the family, and love. Many of Dr. Bardis’ contributions to the Toledo Blade, the International Social Science Review, and the International Journal on World Peace are also included.
