Historical/Biographical Sketch

Greek Life at the University of Toledo has remained a long standing tradition since the university’s founding in 1872. With over 30 different letter organizations, each with their own pledge, history, and mission, the University of Toledo offers students with a wide variety of groups to choose from. These 30 organizations fall under one of four umbrella organizations: the Interfraternity Council, the National Panhellenic Conference, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc., and the Multicultural Greek Council.

Some of the oldest Greek Letter organizations include Alpha Phi Omega, founded in the early 1900’s in Lafayette College, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, founded on March 9th, 1856 at the University of Alabama, Sigma Phi Epsilon, founded in Richmond, Virginia in 1901, and Theta Chi, founded in Norwich University in 1856. From these beginnings, the University of Toledo has been able to add many more chapters to the university’s history.
