Historical/Biographical Sketch

Robert Bass was born on December 31st, 1903 in Vienna, Austria. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Vienna in 1927, Dr. Bass was a lecturer at the Institutes for Adult Education. When Hitler came to power, Bass fled his native country for England, where he found a job at King Edward VI School in Birmingham. He remained in England from 1942 to 1944. Then, he came to America and began teaching at the University of Pennsylvania, focusing on physics, in 1945.

In 1947, he joined the staff at UT as an assistant professor of physics. In addition, he served on multiple organizations and committees around campus. He remained a professor of physics, teaching mainly introductory courses, until his retirement in 1974. During his time at UT and during his retirement, Dr. Bass published several articles pertaining to his interest in physics as well as his interest in space and astronomy.
