2019 Midwest Microbial Pathogenesis Conference

Job Postings

Postdoctoral Position – Seifert lab – Northwestern University, Chicago, IL

Hank Seifert will have a funded postdoc position available on or after June 1, 2020. The research will be on some aspect of the pathogenic Neisseria, including but not limited to: Pilin antigenic variation, pilus expression and function(s), Neisseria cell biology, interactions with neutrophils, oxidative damage resistance, and guanine quadruplex biology. See: https://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/sites/dgp/faculty/profile.html?xid=17695. These are important but understudied organisms.

If any PhD students who are planning to finish next year would like to meet during the MMPC conference, please email, Hank Seifert, h-seifert@northwestern.edu.

Medical Microbiology & Immunology

Faculty Assistant or Associate Professor

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences (Health Science Campus) is seeking to hire two tenured or tenure-track faculty (Assistant or Associate Professor) positions with a focus in virology and/or bacteriology.  The university is looking to expand on existing strengths in bacterial pathogenesis, viral pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions, and immune responses to infectious diseases.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degrees and have at least three years of relevant postdoctoral experience.  Current funding that is transferable to the University of Toledo is required.  Successful candidates will be expected to develop/maintain an externally funded research program and contribute to teaching in our medical and graduate programs.  The department has recently renovated space available, state-of-the-art core facilities, and a BSL3 laboratory.  Additional information about the research interests of the faculty is available at here.  Access to clinical samples is possible through academic affiliation with ProMedica Health Systems

Applications must include: a) cover letter; b) CV; c) a brief summary of research interests, past accomplishments, and future plans; and d) names and addresses of three references.  Application materials should be addressed to Dr. Randall Worth and emailed to MicrobiologyImmunology@UToledo.Edu for full consideration.

The search committee will review applications and continuously review applications until the position is filled.  The University of Toledo is committed to diversity and equal opportunity. Applications from women and minority candidates are strongly encouraged. See UT policy here.

Recruiting for an accomplished scientist to manage research grant, fellowship, training, and other types of awards focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying inheritance, gene expression, and development. The position is in the Division of Genetics and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. Job responsibilities involve working collaboratively with other staff to stimulate, plan, advise, direct, and evaluate program activities for a portfolio of research awards.

Applicants should have expertise and experience using state-of-the-art molecular genetics and/or genomics-based approaches to gain a mechanistic understanding of one or more of these, or related, areas:  Cell growth and differentiation, Signaling pathway dynamics, DNA and RNA replication, DNA recombination and repair, Transcription, Function of coding and noncoding RNA, RNA processing, Protein synthesis

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in one of the sciences underlying these research areas (for example, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, etc.). Familiarity with NIH extramural funding as an applicant, reviewer, or NIH scientific administrator is a plus, and outstanding written and oral communication skills are essential.

The position will be included in the Global Recruitment for Health Scientist Administrators (HSA) at NIH. There are two GS-12/13/14 HSA (Program Officer) vacancy announcements: one for federal employees (candidates with current or former federal employment status) and one for the public (candidates without such status). The announcements open on September 16, 2019, and close on September 25, 2019. The NIGMS Tip Sheet [PDF, 78.2KB] on applications for global recruitments may be helpful.  All interested candidates to contact Dr. Darren Sledjeski to ask questions about this position or Clau Gonzalez to inquire about the recruitment process.

Department of Molecular Microbiology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis

Postdoctoral positions available for highly motivated candidates interested in microbial pathogenesis in Dr. Joseph Vogel’s laboratory in the Department of Molecular Microbiology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO (http://www.microbiology.wustl.edu). The Vogel laboratory studies the structure and function of the Dot/Icm type IV secretion system (T4SS) of the bacterial pathogen Legionella pneumophila. This fascinating specialized secretion system is used to translocate over 300 effectors into host cells. Details about the lab, including on-going research projects and recent publications, can be found at https://vogellab.wustl.edu.

Potential projects involve (1) polar localization of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS, (2) chaperone-mediated export of Dot/Icm substrates, and (3) structural characterization of the Dot/Icm T4SS by X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy (EM).

Successful candidates will have a recent Ph.D. in microbiology, cell biology, or structural biology. Interested candidates should send an application packet, including all of the following as a single PDF file, by email to Dr. Joseph Vogel (jvogel@wustl.edu):

  1. Cover letter indicating current/future research interests and long term plans
  2. Expected starting date
  3. Curriculum vitae
  4. Brief summary of previous research experience (2-3 pages)
  5. Names and contact information for 3 references
