  • Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE)

The Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) is developed by the Center for Postsecondary Research at Indiana University. The survey collects data about incoming freshmen’s high school academic and co-curricular experiences, as well as their expectations for participating in educational activities during the first year of college. In particular, the BCSSE survey offers Advising Report, an individualized report designed to help understand students’ background and expectations about their first year of college.

The University of Toledo participates in BCSSE in summer 2019 for the first time.

The survey instrument can be found here.

  • National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

A nationally-recognized survey on student engagement, NSSE is designed to assess the extent to which students are engaged in educationally purposeful activities that contribute to their learning and success during college (Kuh et al., 2001). The survey was administered at UT annually first and then switched biennially since 2002. The most recent administration was in March 2019. The next scheduled administration will start in February 2021.
