Filipino-American History Month

Planning committees are open to all UToledo students, faculty, and staff. If you are interested in serving on the planning committee for Filipino-American History Month, please email omss@utoledo.edu.

Purpose: Filipino-American History Month acknowledges the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, and commemorates the contributions Filipinos have made to American history that is not taught in school or found in history books.

HISTORY OF FAHM! WITH FAA

Join the Filipino-American Association via Zoom to learn about how Filipino-American month started. There will also be a Kahoot where you can win prizes!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14 – 1:00 P.M. 

This week’s topic is the history of activism in the Midwest and the organizing that went into domestic workers rights. In celebration of the FAHM, AFIRE, CIRCA Pintig and the Filipino American National Historical Society of Chicago Greater Chicago Chapter invite you to the weekly virtual podcast on Zoom every Wednesday at lunch time for three weeks. 

 

TURON WORKSHOP

Learn how to make Turon, a Filipino snack. Kits with the ingredients required will be provided!

This week’s topic is to discuss and invite folks who are in the fight for ethnic studies with Dr. Anna Guevarra, Founding Director of Global Asian Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago.

Learn the old writing system that was used in the Philippines.

Guest panelists include Terrence Yee, former President of Illinois Nurses Association and Bryan Ranchero, Child Nurse Consultant at Public Health DHS Illinois. MYTHICAL CREATURE THEMED MEETING 

THURSDAY OCTOBER 29 – 7:00 P.M. 

Come to this FAA general body meeting in a costume! They’ll be discussing myths and legends, day of the dead, all saints day, and all souls day! You could even win a prize in the costume contest! 

 

MIDWEST ASIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER DESI AMERICAN STUDENTS UNION FALL CONFERENCE 

FRIDAY OCTOBER 30 – SATURDAY NOVEMBER 1 

MAASU works to recognize the needs of the Asian American community by assisting schools with the establishment of Asian American student organizations, promoting leadership among students, and much more. Over 800 student leaders from all over the Midwest come to our annual conference to network, learn, and explore their identities. This is a great opportunity to tune into workshops, keynote speakers, and meet over 800 students from around the Midwest. Please RSVP to reserve your ticket.
