Training and Workshop Opportunities
LGBTQA+ Ally Training
Our LGBTQA+ ally training is a modified version of Safe Place training. Folks should attend this ally training if they are interested in learning about LGBTQA+ issues but cannot commit to a 3-hour training or have previously attended Safe Place training but need a refresher. In this workshop, students, faculty, and staff will receive an introduction to terminology related to the LGBTQA+ community and receive tangible examples of how to support LGBTQA+ students on campus.
Please come back to this webpage in August for Fall 2022 dates for LGBTQA+ Ally training. If you are interested in virtual LGBTQA+ ally training over the summer, please email omss@utoledo.edu.
(Un)documented Student Ally Training
With a rising undocumented student population on campuses around the country, it is important to recognize the needs of this group, as well as the institutional hurdles that exist. The training will help participants understand the unique challenges that these students face. It also focuses on campus and community resources that are available.
Join us for this interactive session in which we will highlight ways in which this
population of students experience their higher education journey differently than
others. Participants are required to have their camera turned on and to actively engage
with each component of the training.
Please come back to this webpage in August for Fall 2022 dates for (Un)Documented Ally training. If you are interested in virtual (Un)Documented Ally training over the summer, please email omss@utoledo.edu.
Student Diversity Workshops
The Office of Multicultural Student Success offers the following four Diversity Workshops
for students. The four Diversity Workshop options are meant to build on each other
and students are encouraged to start with Awareness of Self and move through the four
workshops.
1. Awareness of Self: In this workshop, students will define terms related to diversity, explore their
own identity, and engage in conversations about how their identity has impacted their
experience.
2. Awareness of Actions: In this workshop, students will be given the opportunity to explore any stereotypes
or biases they hold, engage in conversations about how stereotypes and biases can
impact experiences, and how to effectively address microaggressions.
3. Awareness of Institutions: In this workshop, students will begin by identifying institutions that people receive
messages from. After institutions are listed, students will define and discuss different
isms and the communities they impact.
4. Awareness of Current Events: In this workshop, students will discuss current events and how the institutions and
isms from the previous Diversity Workshop play a role in those events. Students will
also brainstorm direct and indirect actions they can do on campus to address the current
events.
If you are interested in completing all four of the Diversity Workshops, you will have the option to earn a Diversity Certificate that can be referenced in future opportunities (internships, grad school applications, future jobs)!
