University of Toledo

Snyder Memorial Hall

Snyder Memorial Hall was the first structure on the UToledo campus to be fully funded by a private gift. That donation came from Walter B. and Grace A. Snyder.

When constructed in 1964, Snyder Memorial was dramatically different from any other campus building. Some criticized it as out of sync with the rest of the University’s architecture. Originally, the building featured black glass and steel on the top two-thirds and resembled a short skyscraper.

Over the years, there was talk of demolishing Snyder because it did not fit in with UToledo's other buildings. In 2010, the façade of the building was extensively renovated to bring it more into line with the Collegiate Gothic designs of the other buildings on Centennial Mall.

Over its lifetime Snyder Memorial has housed many things, including graduate offices, the campus bookstore, a computing center and the Judith Herb College of Education. Currently, it houses classrooms, lecture halls and faculty offices.

Fun fact: Snyder Memorial Hall was the first air-conditioned building on the UToledo campus!
